64Compressed Air Car by MDI
A compressed air car fuel stores air in a tank at high pressure. The engine piston is driven by the compressed air. The storage tank is made up of carbon-fiber which makes it light weight and stronger. The prototype cars have been used in cars for experiments since 1920’s and the compressed air technology is being used by the navy for under water missile propulsion and steam to propel the ships.
This compressed air car would have a top speed of 68 miles per hour and would give a mileage of 125 miles. It has been developed by the ex-Formula One automobile engineer Guy Nègre from Luxembourg, France of an automobile company Motor Development International. This car which is powered by Compressed Air Engine (CAE) has zero to low CO2 emissions, six seats, good luggage space, adheres to all the safety norms and costs not more than an average economy to mid-size vehicle. This air car is ready for mass production. It will be built by Tata Motors in India and approximately 6000 cars would be manufactured in the beginning. The Indian model CityCat would on Indian roads very soon costing about $8177. Air tank filling cost would be approximately $2.00. In absence of the compressor station the plug from car could be plugged into the electrical grid and use the car’s built in compressor to refill the air tank in almost 4 hours. Nègre has signed deals with 12 countries including Germany, Israel, India and South Africa. The company’s mission is to manufacture zero emission cars. At lower speed, this compressed air car emits only clean air from its tail pipe because before compression, the air passes through carbon filters to filter dirt, dust, humidity and other urban air impurities that may damage the engine’s performance. At higher speed of over 35 miles per hour, this compressed air car uses small amount of fuel which could be gasoline, propane, ethanol or bio fuel to heat the air inside the heating chamber as it enters the engine which produces emissions of 0.141 lbs of CO2 per mile that is 4 times less than the average vehicle and more than 2 times the cleanest vehicle available today.
